What an amazing, subtle, beautiful, terrifying book, about war, about hope…
Four people living in besieged Sarajevo, struggling for survival. A book that gets under your skin.

Very sad book about keeping one`s humanity and morality in a city of destruction and terror. The little choices you are forced to make every minute may cost your life and also your morality. All the four characters found a way to stay humans and not to give up to hate and indifference.

Well, I am a bit disappointed actually. Not that I expected a masterpiece, but something better for sure. With all due respect for the tragedy of Sarajevo, in my opinion this story is really predictable, rethorical and boring. It is not easy to talk about war, bloodshed and the useless pointless merciless desecration of life which goes with them, but the events in the characters' lives and the continuous mumbling over them which the Author puts in their minds and mouths are absolutely, yeah, rethorical and...lifeless. Not one page ever moved me, really. Sorry.
Anyway, thanks for sharing. I have already mp'ed the next bookcrosser and I will send out the book as soon as he/she comes back to me with the address.

I didn't really like this book, and not for lack of trying, since the siege of Sarajevo is a piece of nearby history for me. The three stories it tells are disjointed, everything is constantly interrupted by rambling internal monologues or didactic interventions, and nothing really seems to go anywhere; too much tell and not enough show, as some would say.
I appreciate that the author was primarily interested in showing the harsh reality of Sarajevo under siege, its landmarks and its people, but a novel has to work primarily as a novel - remove Sarajevo from this one, and nothing much remains.

Anyway, I PMed the next person in line and will send them the book as soon as I have their address.

A few years ago, at a conference about infringements on human rights, I heard a woman speak about her experience during the seige of Sarajevo, and this brought back many of the impressions from that talk.
I appreciated parts of this very much, but at times I was frustrated by the book and the sense of timelessness which presumably the author put in to mirror the timelessness of those suspended in their everyday actions undertaken for survival.
Thanks for making it available, I'll send on as soon as I have the next address.

I finished reading this a few days ago and was quite impressed. I was worried it'd be terrible after reading some of the previous journal entries, but perhaps that's why I was pleasantly surprised. Well, not that the book is actually pleasant! I was moved by the three stories and I thought the sort of stream of consciousness writing was actually quite interesting. I've read a lot about Sarajevo so I know what happened and I didn't need much background story to be able to imagine it, so it was interesting to read how the events affected the different people in the city and what they thought, what their dilemmas were and how they tried to stayed sane in a crazy world.

I will post the book to shovelmonkey1 today.

Read it, loved it! The siege of Sarajevo told through the perspective of three individuals, Arrow, Dragan and Kenan. Life in a war zone presents different challenges for all them; Arrow is a sniper trying to survive, Kenan is trying to provide for his young family and trying to reassure them that everything will turn out ok despite being so afraid himself and Dragan is trying to continue his life in the city without knowing whether his family are still safe and living in Italy. The horrors of life in a war zone are highlighted in all their stories although I have to admit to being less interested in Dragan's story than the others.

This book is now on offer as a ray-it-forward bookray and is waiting to start travelling again.

What a lot of very differing views on this book by bookcrossers who have already read it.
For me it was one of the best books I have read in quite some time.
I loved Steven Galloway's sparse but very effective use of language to lead us through these terrible historical happenings. When the author was relating Arrow's hesitance to kill as the Cellist played I was just spell-bound with shear emotion.
For me the book was full of powerful emotions & feelings about life, death, human emotions and so much more.
SO, I for one say Thank You Steven Galloway for writing this wonderful book.
