After promising a distraught mother he'd find her missing children, Detective Vince O'Mally discovers their mutilated corpses in an abandoned house. Tormented by images of the horrific crime scene, Vince is forced to quit the case by his superiors and take a vacation. Instead, Vince heads to Dilmun, a small town in upstate New York, to follow up a seemingly insignificant lead. At the town's tiny police department, Vince meets Holly Newman, a pretty but troubled woman who has never recovered from losing her own sister to a child killer more than twenty years ago. Convinced the cases are connected, Vince pushes Holly to recall long buried memories; in the process, he falls in love with her. With a killer on their trail and another child's abduction augmenting their sense of urgency, Holly and Vince team up with the local police and the FBI to track down the killer. Shayne's (The Texas Brand, etc.) haunting tale is intricately woven, and her quirky supporting characters including a retired horror movie star, his mysterious young niece and an omnipresent Native American physician will capture the reader's sympathy. A moving mix of high suspense and romance, this haunting Halloween thriller will propel readers to bolt their doors at night.

I ACTUALLY LIKE THIS BOOK A LOT! THE SUSPENSE WAS GREAT...KEPT ME GUESSING WHO THE BAD GUY IS AND IT TURNED OUT IT WAS THE PERSON I LEAST EXPECTED IT.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was a great story....great characters....a great romance....and just enough twists to keep you guessing. I also loved the cover of the book.......it had a great look to it. The ending was a little smarmy and fell together a little too neatly.......but all in all it was a fun read.......and I couldn't put it down. I really liked the fact that she made the main two characters "Holly and Vince"...not extremely gorgeous......that made them seem much more realistic. It was especially fun to read right now because it is centered around Halloween time and it is that time of year right now for me! Thanks for sharing this book!

I am sending this book on to a fellow Nervousness.org member as part of Nervousness BookCrossing Ring.

Totally forgot I was supposed to get this -- what a surprise. I will go and register it on Nervousness.org right now, and read it next week.

So far (I couldn't resist dipping into it) it looks dark but well-written.

In the end, I didn't finish the book. I kept trying, but it was too dark and distressing and plain creepy for me. Sorry.

Journal Entry 9 by nikel27 from -- Irgendwo / Somewhere --, Hessen Germany on Monday, March 29, 2004
What is a bookring and how do I get in on it?(thanks go to PHC for her detailed instructions which helped me greatly in understanding the process)

A bookring begins when a bookcrosser decides to send a book on a controlled journey. A list of interested readers is set up and the book passes from one reader who reads it and then sends it along to the person next in line. Eventually the book ends up back in the hands of the original owner which, for this book, will be me, nikel27. A reader can join the bookring at any time unless I decide to close it (if that happens I'll make a note that the ring has closed). Just private message (PM) me and let me know where you are located (city, state & country) and if you are able to ship internationally.

What should I do when I receive the book?
Log on to bookcrossing and type in up journal entry so I know it reached you okay. Then private message (PM) the next person in line to get their mailing address so there will be no waiting once you finish the book, if they do not respond within 10 days PM the next reader in line (and me so I know they are no longer interested). Please read the book within 30 days and when complete add another journal entry with your comments. Tell me the truth :) Was it the best thing you ever read or a complete and utter waste of time? I love to talk to books, the good, the bad and ugly (ugly can sometimes be lots of fun to dissect), you can write one sentence or a hundred. When finished
What if I'm the last in line PM me and I'll send you my mailing address.

Thanks for participating!

Please PM me if would like to be added to the list or have any questions about the book or the bookring!

A good novel mixing romance, suspense, serial killers...
A rather happy end (well, as happy as it can be, given the subject.)
It's not great litterature, but it is well written, and I did enjoy it.
