8 out of 10

Finished! This book was great! Funny and meaningful, but also very interesting. I loved learning a little more about the civil rights movement in the 60's and of course, all about bees! I would recommend this one highly.

Gave it to my mom.

Will be starting out as a bookring to commemorate my move to South Carolina. This is a wonderful book about a girl's coming of age, and I enjoyed it. I hope others do too. I think it is a touching story that addresses the issues of its time setting. It talks about nationwide problems in the 60's, but it also is a very personal story told by a young girl dealing with her own tragedies and injustices.
Don't get me wrong. It isn't depressing though some points will make most people cry. It is one of those strange but wonderful books that is full of sadness but filled with joy too, like life I guess...so, this is the final list, and hopefully it will make the ring. It is traveling to some pretty far away places, which are very different from South Carolina, I'm sure.
The list is in the order I recieved PM's and takes into account mailing priorities. Please check the list again before mailing the book because it may change.

The writer in me despairs, reading a first novel as brilliant as this one. Lyrical, sad and wise...truly a beautiful book. Sending on to mmz1847 as soon as I get her address.

This is a gem of a book. Lily searches for some core truths about her life and finds traces of her mother, along with friendship, love, a home, and finally acceptance of herself - BY herself - in a setting quite unlikely for a young white Protestant woman in 1964 South Carolina.

The previous journalers have done an excellent job and I find myself a bit tongue-tied in trying to add anything meaningful to their existing comments. I did find the author's descriptions, particularly of people but also of places and situations, to be finely crafted. I could visualize Rosaleen and the Calendar sisters, T. Ray, and Zach so clearly! Possibly because I too am a daughter of the deep South, I felt the squirmy discomfort of the scenes of racial conflict sharply. And as a daughter, I held her search for her wholeness through her mother poignant.

A wonderful book. It will head off to bookaddict22 in Missouri Saturday 11/22/03.

Just wanted to post an update for everyone... this book is not stuck in a black hole... I'm hoping to get it in the mail to the next reader in the next week or so. I've been in the middle of nursing finals and will at last be finished today- in which I'll come home and will get lost in the book! I'm so looking forward to this afternoon!!
