I was approaching the registration of my 1.000th ! book (yes, I LOVE Bookcrossing ;-), so I was looking for a really special novel.

So, when a few weeks ago I read in one of the forums here about a Canadian novel containing a small scene about a Bookcrossing book, I HAD to read this book.

Getting it wasn't that easy, I finally was able to buy it online in a British bookshop and got it shipped to Germany.

I liked the book very much. It starts a bit slow, but in the end I was really sad when it already ended.

I will make it now (I will register my 1.000th book today or tomorrow) into a book-ring: asking for readers in the forum, so it will travel around the world to make it back to me some day. And on its way, it will gather new fans of Lori Lansens novels, I am sure *g*

A New York Times Editor's Choice, Apr 2010

It will start as a Europeans-only Bookring to keep postage costs low.

IMPORTANT: Please only subscribe if you are willing to agree to read and pass on the book in max. 2 months !

Thank a lot.

So here’s the content:

Mary is fat. Not just fat, but morbidly obese. She knows she's fat (thank you very much) and lives her life in defensive, deflective blame, isolating herself in the small farming town of Leaford, Ontario, the locale of Lori Lansens' first two novels. Everyone skirts the subject of her weight, the literal elephant in the room. Mary and her husband Gooch have gradually drifted away from each other.

On their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, Mary's husband disappears. Bewildered, Mary abandons her sheltered life in pursuit of him across America, encountering a dazzling array of characters and discovering a boundless supply of human kindness in unexpected places. Runaway children, single mothers, taxi drivers, migrant workers and bitter relatives enter her life in chaotic fashion. She discovers new worlds (including Bookcrossing!!!) in hidden pockets of Los Angeles before she arrives at her final destination, the most unexpected surprise of all.

The Wife's Tale is a vivid exploration of a woman taking small, courageous steps toward her authentic self for the first time in her life. In pursuit of her husband, she finds herself instead.

A long time ago I joined this bookring. Then the book somewhere disappeared ... Now I came across the book at the German UnCon 2014.

Edit: 6 March 2015
-- My comment about the book might be kind of a spoiler. Therefore, it will only be readable when you mark it. --

I found this book more captivating during the first half than towards the end. When Mary Gooch reached California, I expected something extraordinary to happen. But this was not really the case - except the mention of Bookcrossing on page 215. ;-) There are no big highlights, not the kind of solution of he story I expected. The book ends in a very slow, psychological way. But this was okay for me too.

I also liked the writing style. Lori Lansens is definitely an author that I will keep in mind.

Now I will see, if somebody from the old ring list is still interested in the book.

Don't worry, this has not vanished again!

I started reading it twice but didn't get far both times. However, I mailed it on to penelopewanders in July. Last week it got returned to me with an "address unknown"-note. Don't know why, I checked back with her and it's correct. I have no idea where the book has been these past month. The envelope looked quite battered (the book's fine) so it must have been a big adventure. ;)

Neckarhex, mysticcat, karen07814s, and shelj7k either didn't reply or didn't want to read it anymore.

It's now off to Switzerland again.

Journal Entry 16 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Monday, December 14, 2015
This has arrived safely in the sunny Swiss Alps, where it will have to wait behind a few other rings which have all decided that winter in the Alps is a good place to be! Unfortunately they'll have to take to the slopes without me as I'm stuck in the office at the busiest time for me, work-wise. Hopefully I can get to this fairly soon. Meanwhile thank you for making this available, thanks for the card and for sending.

Journal Entry 17 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Monday, January 11, 2016
It took me a bit to get into this story, but eventually I was caught up in Mary's story. The various characters are so well described that, quirky as they all are, they come quite to life. The Obeast was also a rather frightening presence. I do remain a bit hungry for a clearer end, but am glad to have discovered this author. The book is here as a ring, I still need to get the next address. Thanks so much for making this available and for sending.

A slow started and I struggled to maintain interest, but it got better and I enjoyed the second half of the book. Couldn't think why I'd signed up for it as it's an author I'd never heard of and not the type of story I'd usually go for in a bookring, but then I came across the bookcrossing reference!

PM'ing bookworm-lady for an address.

What a well-traveled book! Now it's here with me, and I seem to be the last.
Thanks for sending it to me, Pam99; and thanks for sharing, Olagorie.
You know what they say: No bookrays, and then two arrive at once.
I can't read German, so I will ask what to do when I finish reading it: Back to Olagorie?

Currently reading it.

Journal Entry 32 by wingBookworm-ladywing at Madrid, Madrid Spain on Sunday, May 20, 2018
It took me a long time to finish reading it, because I had to travel in between. But overall, a most enjoyable read, a story of how to overcome a really bad and unexpected situation in life.
Mary grew up on me, she is very well described and credible.
As some previous readers have stated, the ending stays open, but I am sure that Mary has learnt a lot about herself, and her future is promising.

A quote:
"She never watched makeover shows on television, too depressed by the quick fixes and confused by the mixed messages. It seemed that people, not just women, were told, on the one hand, to embrace their uniqueness because the superficial was irrelevant, and on the other hand, that an updated hairstyle and a few good accessories could alter the very course of their lives."

As other readers have mentioned, Bookcrossing appears in the plot, and helps Mary to finish reading a book:

"Do I have to pay? Do I have to sign it out?"
"They're for guests. Most of them are from bookcrossing. This location's a favourite drop-off."
"Bookcrossing?" Mary asked blankly.
"The young woman looked up, smiling through her irritation. "People leave books for other people. They do it all around the world. Bookcrossing." (...)
"Why?"
"To share books." (...)
As she found a spacious leather chair near the bookcase where she could comfortably read while she waited, Mary enjoyed the idea that a complete stranger had left the book for another complete stranger's edification, and thought of the volumes communicated in the exchange."

I seem to be last in this bookray, and olagorie doesn't want it back. However, I have found it in the WishList of a very special BCer, and this will make a good birthday present.

Journal Entry 35 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Monday, October 15, 2018
I really enjoyed reading this novel, even though I found it very sad. Mary is such a lovely person. Quite a strange ending which is not really an ending at all. It is a great pity that there is no sequel to it. I cannot afford to send this book on by post to anyone, and it seems a pity to wild-release it after it has already travelled so well to several countries, and has so many journal entries. I will ask another bookcrossing friend if she would like to read it. If not, then I will probably have to release it in the wild.
