WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I left this on the Book Buffet at the Boston UnConvention. I hope that you enjoy the book--and thanks for coming to Bookcrossing.com!
What a perfect time to find this on the Book Buffet - thanks, Badgerjim, you know I'm going to love it!
The 'perfect time' to pick this book up was when Rangel was first under indictment for violating House ethics rules, so maybe he has had a bad day or two since. Although, the week I'm writing this, he's not looking so bad compared to Anthony Weiner. O Fortuna! I never understand people who claim to be bored by politics - even if your life is so rich and important that you're above thinking about national issues, don't the people involved catch your interest?
Anyway, I liked this book. Rangel lives his life, and writes about it, with contagious enthusiasm. The book contains what I was hoping for, the inside story of approaching and moving into political power, with lots of satisfying details. Also, he's been in office long enough, and is smart enough, to offer his own unexpected insights. For example the Congressional Black Caucus members come almost exclusively from very solidly Democratic districts - which means that once elected, a member is likely to stay in office for many terms and may expect to build considerable seniority. This leads to an especially interesting set of relationships and strategies for pursuing coveted committee positions. Oh, and Rangel is also very candid about his own drive to chair the Ways and Means Committee.
If you like politics at all, this book is chock full of all the right stuff. I hope future readers enjoy it as much as I did!

Well written, but I'm not that in to politics, and didn't finish it. Thanks for letting me borrow it.
