Silas Marner: the Weaver of Raveloe is a realistic novel centering on a humble weaver who renounces religion and humanity after members of his church find him guilty of a crime he did not commit. After he moves to a new town, he suffers another reversal when a thief steals a small fortune he had amassed from his weaving trade. The rest of the novel focuses on his transformation from an embittered man into a happy and beloved member of his community after he adopts a two-year-old girl who mysteriously wanders into his home on a snowy New Year's Eve.
Although usually classed as a realistic work, Silas Marner contains elements of a fairy tale, such as thoroughgoing villains, a cache of gold, and a happily-ever-after ending.

This was a re-read. I don't remember enjoying this novel very much the first time around (maybe 20 years ago - eep) but fared much better this time. I felt strongly for Silas and the injustice he suffered, and his love for Eppie is touching.

Silas Marner is wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit and leaves his cloistered life to begin again in Raveloe. His weaving and accumulation of gold sovereigns is all he has to live for. He sinks deeper into a state of torpor when his gold is stolen and he only reawakens when the orphaned child Eppie comes to him.
The novel has a fairy tale ending when Silas is again re-united with his gold. His biggest love now is for Eppie whom he has cared for over the last 16 years and who rejects her natural father in favour of him. Through her he has regained the capacity to love and open up to life around him.
