Journal Entry 1 by Bhuri from Boston, Massachusetts USA on Monday, August 09, 2010
I caught this book at a Boston Bookcrossing Meetup group meeting in Cambridge, MA a few month ago. Except that this book was not registered, no BCID. But that did not prevent me from enjoying it, so here she goes. An avid reader of Ed Mcbain will love this one. It is like being with the folks at 87th, except that it is far colder than New York. Ah, the setting! Now Uppsala is to Sweden what Oxford is to England; Heidelberg to Germany, Boston to the USA. An old University town where lived Linnaeus, Angstrom and Celsius. It makes a fine setting for a murder here, a murder there. The book takes some time to sink its teeth into you. Please do not give up after 30 pages! The Princess of Burundi is elusive mostly, but must be something. African fish come into the picture, in Uppsala.. But three fingers chopped off? Such is the data that the detectives of the Uppsala police have to chew on. Which is how you get to meet the heroine, a single mom on the Force who is quite a force herself. All in all, a fine tale. Now waiting for the Demon of Dakar..

I enjoyed this very much, although it is quite dark and somewhat violent. However, it has a great sense of place, the mystery is intricate and interesting and the characters of both suspects and detectives are well-drawn. My only complaint was the somewhat abrupt ending but it was very well handled. I'll keep an eye out for more bythis autghor, a good one.
