10 out of 10

This book was heartbreaking. Seven-year-old Malka is separated from her mother and sister during a last-minute attempt to flee an "operation", a Nazi round-up of Jews for relocation to the ghetto. The book portrayed the realistic relations among Malka's family members and the psychologically devestating effects of fighting for survival in a world turned upside-down. Yet these effects were portrayed in an appropriate manner for young readers.
