1 journaler for this copy...
I recently participated in a travel-themed bookbox, and that got me looking for travel-related books - and even though I made my swaps and sent the box along, I still found myself picking up more travel books! Maybe I'll have to start a box myself... Anyway, I found this fair-condition trade paperback at a local Used Book Superstore I decided to give it a try.
Later: While there have been major strides in gay rights in many countries (though not all, and not nearly enough) since this book was written in 1991, much of its advice seems sensible even now, whether it's the more general advice about trying to speak the local language if you can, or requesting rooms with double-or-larger beds ahead of time to avoid assumptions that two men or two women would clearly want separate beds, or more specific advice about which locations tend to be more gay-friendly.
And I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, which included helpful hints for traveling (whatever one's sexual preferences) as well as personal anecdotes and some really tempting reviews of local sights - made me want to go traveling myself, and that's an excellent sign in a travel book!
It's organized by locale, from the UK to the continent, and for each area there are writeups, some maps, lists of specific places (these may well be very out-of-date by this time, but it'd be worth checking), additional reading about the history of the area, and references. [The book's age shows there, as the references include phone numbers and mailing addresses, but no web sites {wry grin}.]
The writeups often include anecdotes about famous gay residents of whichever country is being discussed; for example, the section on Wales refers to "the Ladies", Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Butler, who set up housekeeping together in a cottage near Llangollen. (They also include anecdotes about how much beer the authors drank while checking out the local bars; they're delightfully chatty!)
Definitely one of the most entertaining travel guides I've come across!
