I didn't like this as well as Bohjalian's other books that I have read. It was good, but not as good. I saw too much of the "surprise" ending coming, and thought that there was no context in Laurel's life. Her connections with friends and family were not clearly defined, so the way she related to them was not as interesting or understood. The trade paperback is already almost 400 pages, but I would have been happy to read even more to put it all together.
I think I would have enjoyed the book more had it been told in first person perspective from Laurel. Some of the perceptions revealed at the end would have made more sense told that way.
