Journal Entry 1 by discoverylover from Wellington City, Wellington Province New Zealand on Saturday, July 24, 2010
I've had this book on my wishlist for a while, since a friend of mine recommended it to me, and today I was looking around a bookshop and this and the sequel jumped out at me! I of course HAD to buy it (at only $7 how could I resist!). And then, blatantly ignoring my 'one book at a time' challenge that I currently have in place I read it on the train out to visit my Grandma for dinner.

What a fantastic book. I don't know how anyone could possibly give this book up to a second hand book store! Oh well, not complaining! I was incredibly impressed at the quality of this book - all the letters were in their envelopes (and they seemed to be in the right order too!) This book tells the beginning of the story of Griffin and Sabine - two artists who correspond at first by postcard and then by letter and postcard. The postcards are for the majority drawn by the respective artists (at least I'm pretty sure they are). The letters, which are only slightly less works of art than the postcards can be pulled out of envelopes on the page. It ends with a real cliffhanger - tv ain't got nothing on this! Thank heavens I have the second one all ready to read!

Oh this book looks lovely! It arrived some time in the past few days, hubby has been checking the postbox for me on his way home but parcels have to be picked up, so I had a stack of blue slips today! Books, postcards and chocolate, 3 of my favourite things in one parcel! Thanks Skyring! (And discoverylover for sharing the books with us!)

I loved these books! So much that I wrote a full review on HelloItsMe.Us: I received a sparkling surprise the other day. A package from Discoverylover! Inside, two books. Right. I need more books. My bookshelves groan under the double-banked load and Mount Toberead towers over my bedside table. Two very odd books, actually. Fairly slender, they purported to be reproductions of an ongoing correspondence between Griffin, a London artist, and Sabine, a stamp designer on a remote Pacific island nation. Griffin and Sabine are linked in a very strange and intriguing fashion and the first book is largely concerned with uncovering and exploring this mystery, as well as revealing the two characters, their histories and lives. In the second book (Sabine's Notebook), the roles are reversed, with Sabine living in Griffin's London flat, and Griffin travelling to Sabine's island chain. In the third book, who knows what happens? Maybe the mysteries are resolved, maybe they deepen. In fact, there is a second trilogy along the same lines, so obviously there is more to the tale than we discover in the first two books. (More...)

Borrowed from Discoverylover tonight, and read (or maybe I should say devoured - they've such rich and gorgeous books that merely reading them doesn't seem enough) while waiting for my bus. Amazing how much story manages to be packed into so little text! I had to keep going back and examining the pictures to see if they'd help me make sense of the mystery. Now I have to wait impatiently until Discoverylover and I cross paths again so I can borrow the next one! ^ ^ 00 =+= v
