The author writes of her childhood and her relationship with her mother who is a manic-depressive, but when she was growing up in the midwest of the 1950s, they only knew she was crazy.
This was a well-written book. The author writes about her mother who suffer from what was finally diagnosed as bipolar disorder. Her mother did not show significant signs of mental illness until she was in her thirties with three daughters and an abusive second husband who was stepfather to the three daughters. The mother's mental illness was not diagnosed as bipolar disorder for about three decades. The author writes of her childhood which was not the typical childhood and also informs the reader throughout the book of her mother's life. Although interesting, it a book about lives lived with much pain and sadness.
