Edit May 20, 2021: This is one of the best of his masterful early works. Having a child as the main protagonist opened a lot of room for character and situational complexity. And it ends with a spectacular climax, followed by a very satisfactory resolution. On this second reading, I did mostly skim the main central development sections for time. And I was surprised that I remembered some of the action scenes quite a bit differently. Just more proof that long-term memory is always suspect. I currently have this ranked at #868 on my list of best-read books lately. A bit low, because it runs about a a fifth too long.
