What’s a bookray and how does it work? A bookray is when a book passes from person to person based on the list of members involved. Preferably a bookray book is never released into the wild. To join this bookray (or any other bookray of mine) please private message me. I will be glad to add you to the list. New members are added all of the time so be sure to check the list of participants before you mail the book to the next in line just in case! Once you are a bookray member you will receive the book from the person listed before you. When you receive the book please make a journal entry stating that you’ve received it. Then read it as soon as you can (no absolute hurry, just be reasonable please :o), and journal again with your thoughts. You’ll then need to private message the person on the list after you for their address. Mail the book by media mail (it’s cheaper!), and make release notes on the book only if you’d like to. Then sit back and watch the continuing journey! The members are as follows: livelywriter (Virginia) Rendiru Mamikaem (Missouri) maddymonkey (Illinois) Guinneth (New Hampshire) pchemphd (Florida) Zyana (Portugal)

This was an enjoyable story, much like Lett's other book (Honk and Holler, which I liked better). A young, pregnant Novalee Nation is abandoned by her ex-boyfriend at an Oklahoma Wal-Mart, and from there she builds herself a new life. If you like Fannie Flagg you'll like this book. Off to Rendiru next week.

Journal Entry 6 by Rendiru from Carmichael, California USA on Wednesday, September 17, 2003
Oh, the temptation! I found myself with 3 unexpected hours off from work this afternoon. On my way home, my mind was filled with determination to prepare a nice home-cooked stew for dinner and finally attack the mess in our storage room. I probably shouldn't have checked the mail on the way in, because now I'm tempted to spend all afternoon finishing my current book so I can start this one. After much consideration, I have decided that I can start the stew, spend an hour on the storage room, and then treat myself to a quiet hour of reading before my boys get home from school. You know, this is the kind of problem I really don't mind facing. ;-)

I just realized that I forgot to journal this book when I finished it. Oops! I really enjoyed having a chance to read this. The way Novalee finds a "family" among the friends who help her through the challenges she faces feels very true to me, no matter how unlikely the situations she faces. I've already gone out and found another copy to share with my friends and family. :-) I have this book all packaged up and ready to mail to Mamikaem. Thanks for sharing this book with us, pgsahm!

Just received in the mail today. Thanks, Rendiru! UPDATE: 1/3/04.....My apologies for being so slow. I've been backlogged with bookrings/rays and am slowly making my way through the stack. At last this book has come to the top! It's so adorable. I'm really enjoying it so far! 1/20/04...What a sweet story! It's going in the mail to Maddymonkey today.

Well, I've confirmed my long-held suspicion that I should never read an Oprah Book Club selection. This was so not the book for me. I thought the premise was fun and original, but perhaps Letts should have left this in its original short story form. Once Novalee moves out of Wal-Mart, the story quickly devolves due to some really lazy, cloying writing and completely out-of-leftfield plot points. I had no luck contacting pchemphd, so the book was posted to Guinneth in New Hampshire this morning.

At times the writing in this book was just too sickeningly-sweet for my taste. But overall, I found this an enjoyable story that moved along quickly. The characters were engaging (if at times completely daft), and the sense of place was very well drawn. I also liked the general message of hope. I'm glad I had the chance to read this - thanks, pgsahm! I have had zero luck contacting pchemphd for bookrings lately, but I will give it a try.
