Days before his release from prison, Shadow's wife, Laura, dies in a mysterious car crash. Numbly, he makes his way back home. On the plane, he encounters the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday, who claims to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America.

Loved this story of what living in America does to the ancient gods. Just brilliant.

Got it last evening and am excited to start reading. Unfortunately I have two ray/rings ahead of this one so it will have to wait. But will definitely try to get to it ASAP.

Finished it last night. It was a good read for the most part, but the ending was somehow not as loud or as big as I'd thought it would be. It wasn't a bad ending, but it left more to be desired. Gaiman has a style that is quite entertaining, and I wouldn't mind reading more of his works.

I loved this book - it's an amazing tale of the old Gods in America & what happens if people stop believing in them.

This book has arrived in China.
Martinburo was supposed to send me a book from a different ring and accidentally sent me the wrong book. It is a strange twist of fate that I should be sent a book that has been on my wishlist for a while.
Thanks to Martinburo for offering to reimburse me for the postage, but as it is a book that I do actually want to read, and hopefully will get enjoyment from it, I will be happy to send it on to where it was supposed to go.
Coincidently, at this same time I was tagged in the wishlist tag game by someone who offered to send me this book. I think that me reading this book is just meant to be. Unlikely I will finish this side of Christmas though.

Packed this book for my holiday in Japan. Hopefully, it will be read before my return to China.
After flying to Japan via Shanghai, the arrived safely in Tokyo Japan, then accompanied me on my travels to Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka and back to Tokyo. It is now back home with me in Foshan, China waiting to be sent on to the next person.The road trip aspects of the story did appeal to me, perhaps because I was reading the book while travelling. What I found most intriguing was the idea that Gods are only powerful when someone believes in them that they need to be worshiped, and are weak and lost without it. They are only gods when believed to be gods. Very true I think.
There is such a variety of gods in the story, ones that had travelled to the US with a variety of different characters with interesting stories. Is the country now filled with people who have lost contact with their roots, or is it natural that cultural beliefs should develop and change over time? Perhaps the old gods should give up the fight and accept their time is over.
A very enjoyable story, but it did kind of fizzle out a bit towards the end.

I was going to put this in the post to disneyfreaksam, then I realised that this weekend a colleague is flying back to the UK for the Chinese New Year holiday. She has offered to post it for me at the other end of the journey. That will be much quicker than posting from China where, for example, a postcard to my mum in the UK has taken 7 weeks to arrive.
Th ebook will be in the UK by now, so should be in the post soon.

Since seeing the film version of Stardust, I've been meaning to give a Neil Gaiman book a try. This is the one I've had my eye on for a while and after hearing that they're developing a TV series I thought this was a good place to start.
I like most things to do with Gods so this was an interesting view on the subject. I too like the idea that gods are only gods when someone believes them to be so. I liked the themes of redemption and the idea that even "normal" people can have god-like qualities as well.
There's a quote on the front of the book that says "Gaiman has a rich imagination..." and that's definitely true. I don't know how he comes up with half of the story and there's definitely some weird (and sometimes possibly disturbing!) images in the book!! That's not a bad thing though - I really enjoyed it! And I'd really appreciate any recommendations of the next Gaiman book to try.

I loved the book. Unfortenately, shortly after I recieved (and read) the book, there were some private issues (health) that made me neglect a lot of stuff (including bookcrossing). Anyway, almost an year late, I contacted the next person in the ring.

wow - this book has been around the world! I'm on a ring book just now and will go on to this one next - apart from anything else, we're in the middle of moving house so everything else is packed up! (and this was the first book to arrive at my new address!)
a very strange and at times rambling book - possibly not the best read when you're in the middle of a house move, as I kept forgetting where I was up to or what was happening! I liked the premise of the story and the idea of the gods travelling with the immigrants to the new world, but I felt it lost itself towards the end, and I wasn't sure about the 'storm'/war... overall glad I read it but not my usual reading at all.

It's home, safe and sound after two and a half years travelling the world. The original ring started was started in 2009 by Kiwii England, then stalled in Texas after travelling through Ireland, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Canada, South Africa and the USA.
This copy took over in 2010 and has traveled to China, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, back to Canada and the US, then the UK and Portugal before arriving home again. A truly global ring. It will go back into my permanent collection and may travel again although it is looking a bit frail now. Thanks to everyone who took part. Claire x
