"Born into a long line of distinguished lepidopterists, scientists who study moths and butterflies, Ginny and Vivien grew up in a sprawling Victorian home. Forty-seven years later, Ginny lives there alone, tending to her moths and obsessions amid the ghosts of her past.

But when her sister Vivien returns to the crumbling family mansion, dark, unspoken secrets rise, disrupting Ginny's ordered life and threatening the family's fragile peace. Told in Ginny's unforgettable voice, this debut novel tells a disquieting story of two sisters and the ties that bind-sometimes a little too tightly."

Acquired through PaperBackSwap. (Unabridged on 9 CD's; read by Juliet Mills)

6 out of 10

The storyline of this novel was less than enthralling for me, despite the plot description on the back cover. I enjoyed the writing style, and it seemed to be an insightful character study, albeit skewed from the main character's point of view. The plotline was intriguing, but ultimately disappointing in that it just couldn't keep my interest, and the excessive details about moths was a bit much. The climax was reached about 3/4 of the way through, and then it just kind of fizzled from there. I thought this story had lots of potential & it could lead to good discussion, as much of the story could be left to various interpretations. But it was missing something...and in the end, I really just didn't care about either sister.

I was on the fence as to whether I should pick this one out of the box... but I just had to see what it was about due to its description on its cover. Gonna take a chance. Lets see if I give it a thumbs up or down. :-)

I had mixed feelings with this audiobook. I loved Juliet Mills reading of the story and I thought that the writing was very good, but like indygo88 mentions, it seems to drag on a bit too much on the description and study of moths. I can see how the author means to show how Ginny is obsessed with moths and uses the study of moths to relate to the world around her but it did seem that the author could have trimmed these parts down and got on to the interesting bits of the story quicker. I don't want to say too much on the mindset of Ginny, her experiences and relationship with her family and sister Vivien, as I don't want to spoil the experience for the next reader. I will say, however, that this falls into the category of that old Bette Davis and Joan Crawford movie, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane (a fav of mine). Poppy Adams doesn't have a bad story with The Sister but it could be better.
