The hapless crew of the Nadesico is between the powerful Earth Federation forces and the mysterious Jupiterians. They have journeyed out to the planet Jupiter in hopes of rescuing Captain Yurika, but what they don't know is that she may not want to be rescued. Tried to read this yesterday, but I just couldn't get into it.

The art's pretty weak, if you ask me. Eyes are huge and round, but colored so flat that they look dead. The girl's faces tend to look rather fat-cheeked, like they're chipmunks stuffing nuts for winter. Battle scenes are often unclear.

As for the story, well...nothing about it caught my interest. Some space ranger guy from Mars comes to earth and ends up piloting some sort of robot while an all-female crew flies a power ship. Or something? Not clear from what little I read, but I was so bored I just couldn't push on.

I"ve heard the TV show is good, so I may still try to check that out.

I enjoyed Steam Detectives by this author, so I'm going to give this book a try.

Later: Very goofy indeed, clearly a parody of giant-mecha/spaceship manga, though it's so heavy-handed that it gets a bit wearying to have more shoutouts than actual story. Then again, this volume seems to be mostly setup - it isn't until the end that we find that young (hero?) Akito, who's hiding a past as a "coward pilot", is the childhood friend and love-interest of two different girls, one of whom is now in charge of the shiny new ship that she names "Nadesico" (in a joke referencing the Spaceship Yamato via the term "yamato nadeshiko", aka the ideal woman - not a bad joke, but telegraphed out the wazoo). There are supposed-allies who want the ship back, definite-enemies (or are they?) who are trying to blow everything up, a roguish mecha pilot who appears only to sacrifice himself (or does he?) for Akito - and there are lots and lots of silly jokes.

I can see how this would be more fun as an anime; good voice-acting, theme music, and pacing can add a lot.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the anime.]
