From the Proxis Summersale.

I have never read anything by Paul Auster before, because I was a little sceptical about trying after having read a few reviews. I thought his novels would not be entirely my cup of tea. However, after having read this particular review about 'Invisible' I thought this would be the best book to start with, if I wanted to give his novels a try after all.

Amazon Editorial Review

Sinuously constructed in four interlocking parts, Paul Auster’s fifteenth novel opens in New York City in the spring of 1967, when twenty-year-old Adam Walker, an aspiring poet and student at Columbia University, meets the enigmatic Frenchman Rudolf Born and his silent and seductive girlfriend, Margot. Before long, Walker finds himself caught in a perverse triangle that leads to a sudden, shocking act of violence that will alter the course of his life.

Three different narrators tell the story of Invisible, a novel that travels in time from 1967 to 2007 and moves from Morningside Heights to the Left Bank of Paris to a remote island in the Caribbean. It is a book of youthful rage, unbridled sexual hunger, and a relentless quest for justice. With uncompromising insight, Auster takes us into the shadowy borderland between truth and memory, between authorship and identity, to produce a work of unforgettable power that confirms his reputation as “one of America’s most spectacularly inventive writers.”

August 2010:
I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed! One of the best books I have read so far this year! It's a skilfully constructed, gripping and thought provoking story, told from different points of view. In fact it's more than that, but there is not much else I can say about it without giving away spoilers. I think the reader should simply 'experience' it with as little information as possible beforehand. I will start a bookring to see what others think.

One quick cautionary note: if the thought of a brother and sister falling in love and having a long-lasting physical relationship is something that would make it difficult for you to read in a novel, "Invisible" may not be for you. Some of the scenes would be rated R (at least) in the movies, but they are tantalizing, not graphic.

The book arrived yesterday and will be read when I finish my current book. Thanks a lot, bestfriends! :-)

Update, 25.9.: It took me a bit longer to finish my previous book but I'm now about 1/3 into "Invisible" and I'm enjoying it very much so far.

Great book! It's very well-constructed and beautifully explores the central characters in the course of the novel. I haven't even read half of Auster's novels yet but I think Invisible is my favourite so far. It has some of the typical motives of his other work, like authorship, reality/fiction etc. which I really enjoyed and I also liked the way Auster uses different narrative perspectives for Adam's story (and the reason given in the novel).

Thanks a lot for sharing this book, bestfriends! It will be on its way again soon. :-)

Received this book a few days ago and have already finished reading it. It's a wonderful book, but at the end I felt somehow a bit confused and dissappointed.Only for a short while though. I just love the way Auster writes, so effortless and wonderful.

I would like to read this book again someday but for this copy it's time for new adventures so as soon as I get the address for the next participant off it will go.

Thanks bestfriends for sharing.

Not me, I have read the book already, but the others on the list might like to!
This book should have moved on by now. I don't mind if people need more time (just as long as they let me know), but the reading had already been done on 5th November, so that can't be the problem. This way I have no idea what happened after that! Still waiting for an address or did the book get lost in the mail?
Please let me know what the status of the book is!

January 7th:
I put an ISO message in the bookring forum.
January 9th:
Also in the Finish forum.

10th January update:
Aava has notified me by PM that the book has been mailed a few days ago. She has had computer/internet problems lately. I hope it will arrive soon.

12th April update:
Still no sign of the book. In February aava has notified the next on the list that she did indeed sent the book, but that it had been returned to her by the postal services (?) although the address was correct. If she re-sent it, like she promised, it should have arrived by now!

18th May:
Still no sign of the book. I think we can consider it lost or stalled.
