I was a member of the BFS for many years and this anthology pretty much shows why I decided to leave (apart from it being a bit pricy!). For a society that was set up to promote 'fantasy', what you end up is with quite a lot of horror. Now, I don't mind a good horror story, with monsters, ghosts and all sorts of crazy happenings, but I also like the sword and sorcery kind of fantasy that was somehow lacking.

Still, once I've got over my little niggle, I did enjoy this anthology.

My favourite story was 'The Sustenance of Hoak' by Ramsey Campbell and guess what - it had a 'S&S' feel to it :) I liked the world he created in such a short period, as well as the horrific situation the villagers found themselves in. It was by far the best story here.

I also liked 'Whisper Lane' by Mark Chadbourn, where no good deed goes unpunished, and 'The Man Who Drew Cats' by Michael Marshall Smith, where revenge can be drawn.

A lot of the other stories were OK - some a bit predictable and some I was surprised had been written by such excellent authors of novels. However, I don't think there was one I actively disliked, which is something I guess!

Wow! Just what I love to read! Horror stories are just my thing!
Some "old friends" such as Ramsey Campbell, Neil Gaiman, Michael Marshall Smith, Peter Straub... and so many more still to meet!
Thank you so much, dark-draco; I also appreciate your detailed comments, let's see what I make of it after I read it... :)
