My Sister's Keeper
3 journalers for this copy...
Bought this in a local charity shop as I know the story is going to be a weepy and I wanted to read it before seeing the film.

I stayed up late last night to finish this one ... and I'm so glad I did! Weeping like a wally in the canteen at work is never a good look, but home alone its perfectly acceptable!
You know it's going to be a weepy from the start - how can it not be when it deals with the whole idea of a healthy, genetically chosen child being used as a donor for her very sick sister? Picoult cleverly balances along the line of it being too sentimental, or too preachy, instead offering a real dilemma that this family finds itself in. When I started reading the book, I was sure that I knew which side I came down on, but now that I've finished, I'm not so sure!
And the ending? A complete twist that literally blindsides you. I re-read the chapter concerned just to make sure that I had it right! After having already worked out Anna's real motivation for suing her parents, and why Campbell has a dog, I was feeling a little underwhelmed - then BAM! Picoult pulls your feet from under you. In a way, you could say she's wimped out - her ending doesn't provide an answer to the question concerned - but then again, that's kind of cool. By not knowing what she thinks, the reader is left to continue pondering.
So to sum up, this isn't the sort of subject you can enjoy, but the book was well written, the subject engaging and I'm glad that I picked it up to read.

Wow thank you so much for your surprise Christmas box full of goodies. You are far too kind!
I must remember not to read this one on the train if it's a weepy :)

Gosh ten stars for me too. I might have to watch the film by myself as well! Really ‘enjoying’ Jodi Picoult’s books despite the difficult subject matter.
