1001 books
A darkly comic portrait of human life and possibility. Quoyle is a hopeless hack journalist working in New York. When his two-timing wife dies in a road accident, he retreats to his ancestral home on the coast of Newfoundland where he must confront the unpredictable forces of nature and society.

I picked this up in the Oxfam shop as it's not only on the 1001 list, but is also on The Big Read list. Two challenges in one.
Having now read the book, I'm happy to say that it's also a very enjoyable read. I loved the story, the characters and the style of writing - so pretty much everything then.

Each chapter has a snippet of information, usually about knots, at the start of it. I found this quite fascinating and at times was on the verge of fetching some string so I could try out some clove hitches or even a mooring hitch. Might still do that actually...
