This was amongst a group of books that we found in an old office that we were clearing out. No-one wanted them, so they came home with me for bookcrossing. This actually looks as if I might enjoy it - its certainly my sort of genre.

I really, really, really enjoyed this - it was published in the 50's and most books would have dated over time, but this hadn't. It's the story of a ship, the Compass Rose, and her crew, as they are trained for convoy escort duty in the Atlantic during WW2. Through the hardships of cold, the lose of ships and lives, bombing back home and the thought they might be losing the war, the men struggle through it all. Until the utimate happens and the ship is sunk.

There are some really powerful moments in this, some that had me reaching for the tissue box! Some of the characters did seem to be abandoned half way through, and it would have been good to find out what happened to them, but it was also great to follow the Captain right through to the ceasefire.

A great read that I am glad I rescued.

Every year at Christmas, I try to find a bookrosser with a similar taste in books to mine. I will then fill a box with books from their wishlist that I have on my TBR list, read them and then send them off in the new year. This is one of those books. Hope you like it.
