Paul's vision of a green and fertile Arrakis has come true - but the giant Sandworms are suffering as the desert begins to disappear. It is left to his twin children to find a solution to the economic crises, while fanatics threaten to undermine everything the hope to achieve.

Re-reading this so long after my first go, I was struck again by how rich Herbert makes his worlds. This book is essentially a transition from Paul's reign to that of his son, Leto, and yet it is also so much more than that. I enjoy all the political manoeuvring, the assassination attempts, the plotting and murder...and yet the Atreides always win out. And Leto's decision to begin the transformation into a half-worm, half human, is frightening. Another excellent read.

You are naughty sending me all those books - I'm overwhelmed thank you :-)

12 Jan 18 - I found the start of the book hard going and at times contemplated giving up. But I persevered and made it to the end. I think for me there was too much politics and so much double crossing it was hard to work out what was going on. It did pick up towards the end but not my favourite from the series.
