Midnight on Skye: a young crofter's daughter is cruelly and ritually murdered on the bleak Scottish mountainside. Very soon Gianetta Brooke, a guest at the deceptively idyllic Camasunary Hotel nearby, finds herself tangled in a web of rising fear and suspicion. When she discovers that her ex-husband has booked into the same hotel, the peaceful holiday for which she had hoped takes on quite another complexion.

I've enjoyed Mary Stewart's books in the past & as with others, this was written in the 1950's. It is very much of that time (I think you can tell when a book was written at that time rather than about that time) & that's particulary seen here in the attitude to Gianetta & Nicholas' divorce & the interaction between the guests.

I didn't enjoy it as much as previous books as it failed to hold my attention & I found myself skimming some the pages. I choose to read it as it fit the bill for this months ULTIMATE CHALLENGE theme but maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I'd left it till I was in the mood for this type of suspense.

Perhaps it's loyalty to Mary Stewart that makes me read her books time and again - but as Plum_crazy points out her novels are written in the 50's and are becoming dated. My favourite by Mary Stewart is called "My Brother Michael," set in Greece - and there is a glimmer in Wildfire at Midnight of some of same themes: namely beautiful young girl chasing through wild countryside, in danger of death, saved at the last second by handsome hero who she previously suspected of being the baddy! Aah! the stuff Mills and Boon is made of.
This story would adapt easily into an Agatha Chrisitie with Miss Marple at the Helm: remote hotel, a grusome murder or 2, plodding Police inspector, and everyone suspecting each other, until all is uncovered at the end.
(I did enjoy it, though)
