Set in and around the women's prison at Milbank in the 1870's , "Affinity" is an eerie and utterly compelling ghost story, a complex and intriguing literary mystery and a poignant love story with an unexpected twist in the tale.

Following the death of her father, Margaret Prior has decided to pursue some 'good work' with the lady criminals of one of London's most notorious gaols. Surrounded by prisoners, murderers and common thieves, Margaret feels herself drawn to one of the prisons more unlikely inmates - the imprisoned spiritualist - Selina Dawes.
Sympathetic to the plight of this innocent-seeming girl, Margaret sees herself dispensing guidance and perhaps friendship on her visits, little expecting to find herself dabbling in a twilight world of seances, shadows, unruly spirits and unseemly passions.

The blurb says it's " a spellbinding ghost story, a complex & intriguing historical mystery & a poignant romance with an unexpected twist"....yes, it's all those things & more!I found this book totally absorbing. It's difficult to know what to say about the story itself as I don't want to spoil it for any future readers. The descriptive writing is excellent, you can almost feel the dark, dank prison cells & feel the tension build up as Margaret waits alone for Selina...I swear my heart was racing by the end of that chapter!I believed in Selina's gift & the ending, on reflection, was the only way it could end -though not what I was expecting or perhaps hoping for...but I'm not giving it away!

Ha ha! Yet another book courtesy of Plum-Crazy and the Forget-Me-Not Charity Shop! Yes, I agree, we must be their best customers – I’m looking forward to reading the 3 I’ve picked up today (but I had to leave the Wild Swans behind – I’ve had it before and never read it so I’ll not read it now as my unread pile is getting bigger).
Lots of releases to follow in September as part of my first challenge; some will be released to a motorcycle rally in Brighouse 10th and 11th September. Release notes will follow.
Happy Reading.

Wow! Just finished this book - read into the night and again this morning! I've rated it a 9 because it kept me guessing right to the end. As Plum-crazy has said above, it's difficult to write about this story without spoiling it for other readers - but my sympathies lie with poor Margaret who lost her first love to her own sibling. She is lonely, impressionable, and being giving strong and hallucinatory sleeping medicine by her over-protective (but not especially loving) Mother!
