Journal Entry 1 by missJAS from Vancouver, Washington USA on Thursday, July 10, 2003

10 out of 10

Ordered this after reading SHADE OF THE MAPLE by the same author.

I'm so impressed! This is a journal started by a father the day his 8 year old son was apparently abducted (a novel). It is more about the emotional journey under such horrific circumstances than it is about solving the mystery of what happened to his son. The book is moving, spiritual in the sense that the experience produces life-altering changes in the father. It touches on the struggles every parent has balancing all segments of our lives while feeling guilty for all that we miss with our children. The beautiful moments that slip by unnoticed because life becomes the fulfilment of one task after another.

It thouched my heart. I'm going to share with others through a bookring. Here is the order:
Theresa-A (England)(read and released)
pgsahm (Virginia)**requested to be skipped**
mspooh (Texas)**requested to be skipped**
mysteryfan03 (Missouri)**read and released**
squirrel818 (Minnesota)**read and released**
jdt (California)**read and ready to mail**
spark (California)
tamster33 (California)
raynebair (Alabama)
senorag (Mississippi)
kymberlie (Texas)

Well, what can I say? This is a very moving book, which had me close to tears a lot of the time. As a parent, I can relate to the words in the ‘journal’, and the feelings of anguish and difficulty when the father thinks about all the time he wasted on things other than being with his son. It certainly is difficult to find time to do everything that appears to need to be done.
I read this book in less than a couple of hours this morning, and I am going to buy a copy of my own, because I think it’s a good book to read when things are getting on top of you as it helps put things in perspective.
Thank you for the chance to read this, missJAS :-)

‘The Gravel Drive’ will be on its way to pgsahm soon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Much as I would love to keep this book, I really need to send it on. The only thing is, I can't get anyone's address!! pgsahm has asked to be skipped, and I can't get in touch with senorag. I'll try senorag again, and also kymberlie. If any of you are reading this, please PM me!!! Thanks :-)

Update: For one reason and another, pgsahm, senorag and kymberlie all asked to be skipped, so 'The Gravel Drive' is on its way to MsPooh. It's well worth the wait though - Enjoy!!!

My original copy of THE GRAVEL DRIVE has been lost in the postal system since November. I am replacing it with a new copy that I obtained, and am using the original BCID number so that the bookring can continue. Should the original show up and be journaled, we can reassign a new BCID to it I guess. I'm doubtful that will happen after five months missing.

Mailed to mysteryfan03 on 4/20/04.

Sorry that I hadn't journaled again! I was just looking thru my shelf and saw TBR on this book. This book is a fast read and very sad. I am sure that most people cant even imagine loosing a child in any way. That being said, I am glad that I read the book, though to say I enjoyed it would not be true. This is on its way to Squirrel818. Thanks so much MisJAS for sharing this with us!

Mailed this to Squirrel818 on 5-20-04.

Thanks to all before me!

Oh dear - I wanted to like this book more than I did. (And please don't read further if you haven't read this book yet.)

Maybe because it was fiction, not the author's experience - it seemed contrived. What parent could write journal entries at 1 AM so lyrical and coherent just days after a child was missing?!

And then the leukemia and heart attack - I don't know - it just seemed over-the-top.
And I usually am a real sucker for this kind of book.

I did appreciate the chance to share in this bookring. Thanks again!

Sending to spark!

Missing in Action.
Spark believes she released this but tamster33 never received it. I already replaced it once in this ring when it was lost.
Sorry to those still on the list.
