His Dark Materials 2: The Subtle Knife

I bought the complete trilogy a number of years ago and enjoyed reading them. Now that I have finally got round to registering them, I am looking forward to re-reading the set and then releasing them out into the wild.
The second book in the trilogy jumps in time a bit, as we are introduced to a new character, Will, from the Oxford of this world. He's on the run, trying to hide himself and his mentally ill mother from people that seem to want something from him. He finds an odd window into another place, steps through .... and meets Lyra.
I still enjoyed this book, but maybe not quite so much as the first one. The author crams a lot into the story and just sometimes I started feeling that he was so desperate to get his ideas across, that the characters suffered a bit. However, on the whole, it was another good read.
The spectres are a truly terrifying monster - imagine growing up in that world? Knowing that as you grow older you might suddenly start seeing them and so become vulnerable to attack. But I didn't quite understand how Mrs Coulter could control them - there is never any hint in the previous that she has that sort of power.
Looking forward to reading the next to see how it all turns out.
