Juliet, Naked

Hornby returns to his roots: music, manic fandom and messy romance in his funny and touching latest, dancing between three perspectives on fame: a sycophantic scholar, an appreciative audience member, a fabled singer-songwriter who can't see what all the fuss is about. After cult musician Tucker Crowe vanished from the public eye 20 years ago, his small but devoted fan base built up a mythology around his oeuvre and the people and places associated with his storied life. Self-appointed Crowologist Duncan has indoctrinated his girlfriend, Annie, on the wonders of Tucker, but when Annie fails to recognize the genius of a newly released version of Crowe's classic album Juliet, their 15-year relationship quickly crumbles. Meanwhile, Duncan's glowing first review is increasingly de-bated, while Annie's deconstructive essay posted on the same Web site earns her a clandestine e-mail correspondence with the reclusive musician. Soon, their exchanges grow more personal; given that Tucker lives in an American backwater and Annie resides in a remote English town, both view their e-mails as a safe flirtation until the dissolution of Tucker's latest marriage and a crisis with one of his several neglected children brings him to Annie's side of the Atlantic. Through brisk dialogue and quick scene changes, Hornby highlights each character's misconceptions about his or her own life, and though Duncan, Annie and Tucker are consistently ridiculous and often self-destructive, they are portrayed with an extraordinary degree of sympathy. Tucker's status of Dylan by way of Salinger allows for an intriguing critique of celebrity fetishization and of the motives behind the eccentricity that comes along with fame. Obviously, this is a must-read for Hornby's fans, but it also works as a surprisingly thoughtful complement to the piles of musician bios and memoirs.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Geht heute per Post an die erste Ringstation, viel Freude!
Hat heute den Weg in meinen Briefkasten gefunden, danke für's Schicken, später mehr :)
...Half-way through the book, yay. God, Nick Hornby is such an amazing author, I love reading those books. But somehow I always get confused at some point... it's brilliant stories, but weird as well? Don't know. I cannot read the book in one go, because that makes my brain go fuzzy... but I like it so far.
...Finished! Loved it, simply loved it, from the very first page to the end. No more to say. There aren't so many books these days that I just cannot put down - but this was one of them.
And yes, I liked this one better than Slam, too. But still, my all time favourite remains A Long Way Down, and that's not likely to change, no matter how many more books Hornby will write (and I hope there will be MANY).
Will send it on soon :)
Thank you for the ring!

Just finished Juliet, Naked and I like it very much.
It was the third Hornby I've read and I think I liked it second best. Slam was a bit bit better in m opinion. I liked the music-topic (As in High Fidelity) 'cause music is playing a big part in my own live and so I could laugh about Duncan's behaviour a lot 'cause I found parts of myself in it. Annie is a adorable character and Tucker... well seriously I couldn't found a connection to this character.
A enjoyable, interessting read. Thanks for sharing.
It will travel on soon.

Thanks for sending, the book maybe reached me some time ago but I'm just back from my practical training.
Due to moving I won't have time to start reading again. So it will travel unread.
Asked for address.

Nackt nach Hamburg, viel Erfold dabei ;)
Arrived today, safe & sound. Thanks!
Heute wohlbehalten eingetroffen. Vielen Dank!
Update, July 8th 2011: With Nick Hornby, it's one book I adore, next book I abhor (or at least find unreadable). On the adore side there are: "About a Boy", "High Fidelity", "31 Songs" and "Mein Leben als Leser (The polysyllabic spree)" the abhor section currently consists of "Fever Pitch" and "How to be good".
When I read the first reviews I was quite sure to have another score on the adore side with "Juliet, Naked". But this is the first Nick Horny book/novel I can't quite allocate. I liked it altogether, but then there were many details that I didn't like. I guess the book review done by Julie Myerson for the Observer on August 30th 2009 pretty much sums it up for me.
I would like to add that as much as I agree with Myerson when she says "When Hornby tells us what's going on in a character's head, it's not that we don't believe him, more that it leaves us too little to do. I wanted gaps, I wanted subtext, I wanted uncertainty.", I still would have liked very much to know what Tucker wrote to Annie about Grace and himself. That's an omission I do not approve at all.
But nevertheless: Thanks for the read! The book will travel on as soon as the next address is known.
Nachtrag, 8.
