Journal Entry 1 by Ythan from Ellon, Scotland United Kingdom on Sunday, June 20, 2010
Back of Book: Brave, noble Ivanhoe has been to the Crusades to fight alongside King Richard. Now he returns home to claim his bride, Rowena, a princess of Saxon blood. During Ivanhoe's absence, the bitter struggles between Saxon and Norman have continued. While King Richard is believed to be held captive by the Duke of Austria, his corrupt brother John has raised an army of lawless noble to usurp the throne. In an engrossing story of heroism and romance we follow Ivanhoe's valiant destruction of the enemy, his rescue by Robin Hood and his men, and his courageous battle on behalf of the beautiful Jewess Rebecca. Packed with incident and brimming with vitality, Ivanhoe is one of the great romantic novels to recreate the Age of Chivalry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Review: I think this story would be great to see on screen but by book it was difficult to imagine all the characters and situations. Found it very confusing especially when characters were mentioned by name on some occasions and by either religion or title at other times. At least I could try and imagine what the characters looked like with the pictures of the cast in this book. Will keep a look out for the tv series being repeated in future.

My Dad has been recommending me Sir Walter Scott for years, so I decided to give Ivanhoe a go. I got involved in the story very early on, and only the arrival of my sister and her family got me to put it down! I have studied some of the old tales of chivalry - The Mabinogion and a Portuguese translation of the search for the Holy Grail - and so was happy to lose myself in this. Ivanhoe is a Saxon knight returning from the Holy Land, estranged from his father, Cedric. England is a divided place. The usurper Prince John is ruling over his brother's kingdom, with the triumphant Normans and the vanquished Saxons barely coexisting. Add to the mix the Jewish moneylender, Isaac and his daughter Rebecca and you have a great courtly tale. Reading about an early England was very interesting, as well as the Templars and Isaac and Rebecca. It was also fun to see other well-known characters and historical figures, such as Robin Hood, Richard the Lionheart, Prince John and Friar Tuck, amongst others. A good read and a worthy entry on the 1001 list.

I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I was expecting it to be a bit hard going, and it was in places, but I loved the setting and the inclusion of characters like Robin Hood and King Richard. A good old-fashioned story. Returning to the library :)
