Originally published in Switzerland and gracefully translated into English by Carol Brown Janeway, The Reader is a brief tale about sex, love, reading and shame in post-war Germany. Amazing film. Now I've got the book to re-read.

*For generations to come, people will be reading and marvelling over Berhard Schlink's The Reader I can only concur. This is a fab book. It's also a beautiful movie - almost more shocking in that than in the novel, and usually I prefer books to films, but in this case I'm not so sure. Both are marvellous

re-read this. It's a wonderful book. I somehow think that it works better as a movie though (really unusual for me) because if you ARE a reader - like me - I think the shock about Hanna doesn't carry as much impact if you READ it. I really like what the Sunday Telegraph had to say about this novel "Deeply moving, sensitive enough to make me wince, a Holocaust novel, but light years away from the common run"
