'A Comedy of Errors in the Umbrian Hills', says the tagline, which I suppose is near enough; it veers between farce and Serious Drama. Frances, a theatrical producer who is successful in everything except getting over her ex-lover Alastair, is dispatched to Italy by her cousin, who feels that she should come to terms with her past. She is accommodated at a somewhat eccentric art school, and hilarity ensues.

... And that's about it, really. We learn about Frances' Mysterious Past, the villain of the piece goes to a better rest than he has ever known (in human terms, at least), the art school is saved, and it is all happy ever after. And it left me cold.

It seemed to consist of three strands - Frances' love life, the art school saga, and Frances' childhood experience. This last did not mesh at all well with the first two - it was much darker, and I would have liked to see a lot more of it. I would like, for example, to have learned more about Maria's experience, rather than 'we'll probably never know what she saw'. It is entirely possible that I read too many lugubrious Anglican thrillers - but I am actually interested in people's religious/mystical experiences, and, since the plot turned on it, I could have done with more of it.

Some tiresomely predictable stuff about the failures of the Roman Catholic Church. (No, it's not my favourite institution in the world, either, but this smacked dangerously of Did Not Do The Research. For a start, I am fairly sure that an an alleged vision of the Virgin Mary would have been better investigated.) Jack was creepy as hell, in my opinion. The theatrical stuff was quite fun, and I appreciated the background gay romance at the art school. Altogether, though, not one I'll be reading again
