From the book cover:

Through the eyes of Dolores, the youngest of Frankie and Mary Gauci's six daugthers, we're offered by keyhole view of a Maltesefamily in Cardiff, Wales, that singeing at the edges.
Dolores presents an unsparing portrayal of the underwold of the 1960s Tiger Bay, the coarse sensuality of life among docks, the gaming rooms and cafes, the crumbling homes and burning secrets that tear this family apart.....

What a surprise. I went to the post office thinking that one of the books I had purchased from Ebay had arrived and there was this book waiting for me. This is one of the first books that I put my name down for after finding Bookcrossing and I had long ago considered the ring lost. I don't even remember sending my address but I guess I must have.

This book looks every bit as good as I imagined, just my kind of book. As is usual with bookcrossing all the books come at once but I hope to have this one read by the end of the week. I shall let you all know soon what I think of it.

What a book. It took a little longer than I expected to read it as I have been flat out with other things. My only criticism is that this is another one of those books that doesn't use quotation marks. I find this really annoying and just don't see why so many authors these days are doing that.

Anyway, the story itself was wonderful. Terribly depressing though, one of those books that you finish and just sit there like it hasn't really ended. Don't read this book if you like everything sewn up nice and neatly because it doesn't happen. It will leave you feeling a bit of a void and I am still wondering about what happened to the characters.......

Thanks for the chance to read this great book.

I really wanted to like this book ... but I was left unfulfilled.

It was weird to read everything from Dol's perspective, especially since she was a newborn or 5-year-old through the majority of the book. Of course, it could be from an adult perspective, but it read as omnipresent.

I felt the sorriest for the mom and for Fran. I couldn't quite figure out if Joe was the father of one daughter, or possibly more. I SO disliked the father, Luca, and Rose. And the story didn't really support the idea that the other daughters were protecting Dol. And why did Louis know where Fran was when the siters, especially Celesta, was unawares? I am usually pretty adept at reading between the lines, but ... needless to say, I wasn't pulled into this story.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read The Hiding Place. I am now awaiting tania-in-nc's address so it can continue its journey.

Just finished this one. I must admit that this book grew on me as the kids grew up and became more independent. Powerful. Thanks for sharing!

I collect quotes as I read. These ones are fun, poetical, or even philosophical. Take what you like, and leave the rest. Note that these aren't necessarily the "best" in the book. These happen to be close to the spot where I stopped reading each night.

A nurse brings in two cups of tea, the silence is broken by a rattle of china. My father stares down into his cup, grateful for something to look at, blowing on the surface until a scum forms, then blowing on this until it breaks like muddy ice. p67
[comment: It's amazing how many times a cup of tea is mentioned in novels. It is the nurturing act in times of trouble. Of course, "father" does the unexpected with it :)]

Rose has told me her life; she's galloped over the years between us as if they were matchstick fences. p212

The stars swagger in the sky. p233
