This book sat on my "Africa" bookshelf for a very long time and then when i moved house it came to London with me. Excellent read about a long misunderstood character who featured large in the British Empire's expansion into Africa. Jeal has found archival information, letters and personal information with which to present a clearer and more rounded approach to Stanley's biography. Seems like Livingstone wasn't such as saint after all. Not that anyone who was involved in the Scramble for Africa deserves such a title.
