I liked "the Mistress of Spices' a lot - so I am looking forward to read this one! Sister of My Heart spans many years and zigzags between India and America as the cousins first grow apart and then eventually reunite. Divakaruni invests this domestic drama with poetry as she traces her heroines' lives from infancy to motherhood, but it is Sudha and Anju who give the story its backbone. Anju might speak for both when she says: "In spite of all my insecurities, in spite of the oceans that'll be between us soon and the men that are between us already, I can never stop loving Sudha. It's my habit and it's my fate." Book-lovers may well discover that reading Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is habit-forming as well.(amazon)

Thanks qantaqa for giving me this one - I read it now and found it interesting.. some aspects of 'Indian Life' are just.. cruel... I am a bit ambivalent about this book - whether I liked it or not.. hmmm..

Thanks kiki66, this looks really interesting. I read "A suitable boy" a while ago and find the subject of life in India fascinating. Note to self: return to kiki66 when done.

Just realized that I didn't journal after I finished reading the book. Really good read. It's a bit on the easy side of reading, but that's okay. I really enjoy the cultural background in books like this one. They live a life that I find hard to imagine. Having a husband selected for you and you don't get much of a say about it. I was glad about the twist in the story with the father of one of the girls who turned out the good guy and not the murderer they thought he was. :-)

'Sister of My Heart' is a deeply emotional book whose characters and events truly touched me. I loved the interaction between the characters and the way their personalities affection events. There were some lovely surprises during the book as well, which really got to me. I rarely like romance stories, but the descriptions and the style of this book truly won me over. One of the best books I've read so far this year.
