Journal Entry 1 by Londonlife from London , Greater London United Kingdom on Sunday, June 06, 2010
I enjoyed this book and loved the character of Elizabeth Philpot but overall felt it was missing a certain warmth. I learnt a lot though :).

I really liked this book and was drawn to the 2 main characters Mary and Elizabeth. I could imagine them searching for the fossils on the beach and how exciting it would be to discover something no one else had ever seen. I personally like shells and fossils and this was something I could relate to. I am offering this book up on the forums as a bookring hopefully many more people will get to enjoy it like I did. Looking forward to more reads by this author and thanks again to Londonlife for sending it to me!

Journal Entry 8 by guinaveve at Mason, Ohio USA on Monday, September 06, 2010
I didn't like this as well as some of Chevalier's other books, but it was still enjoyable. The parts I liked most involved the feelings of society about the new creatures found as fossil, things they had never seen before that challenged their beliefs. I have the next participant's address and will be sending this on.

Journal Entry 12 by oi-reader at Toledo, Ohio USA on Thursday, October 14, 2010
This is the first Tracy Chevalier book I've read and found it delightful! The characters Mary and Elizabeth were well rounded ( I prefered Mary) and Chevalier's descriptive writing allowed me to nearly visualize the Lyme shores. Having searched many lake shores in search of fossils and such as a child I could well relate to Mary's excitement at finding her "monsters". Having the novel based somewhat on fact brought a broader knowledge of palentology and of how far women have come in the field of physical sciences. It is a shame, both in real life and in the novel however that Mary and Elizabeth were not always given proper credit for the findings they provided. Thank you for allowing me to join this ring. I have lauraloo29's address and will be posting this forward tomorrow.

I found this book in my mailbox today, as I have been away. I'm on sick leave b/c of infection in my elbow, and am not really online... Unfortunately I'm behind on my reading because the past months have been very hectic, so I'm afraid this book goes into the pile of unread book ring books. Very much looking forward to read it though.

This was a lovely read. I love how it describes the situation for women in the 19th century. It's well written, and I'm glad it wasn't made into anything sappy. I have PMed Sardonyx for their address, so that it soon can be on its way again. Edit 23 March 2011: Book will hopefully be on its way tomorrow.
