7 out of 10

I'm a small-time Mavis Cheek fan. She tends to write women's fiction which is very much situated in present-day Britain - right down to the food fad of the moment - starring a plausibly-hapless sympathetic woman, trying to keep up with the Joneses and not quite managing. Or as the Daily Mail (!??!!) says, "Cheek is a marvellous writer whose characters are beautifully drawn, whose observations on the absurd behaviour of the middle aged invariably hit the mark ..."

But then everything will work out in the end, which makes it great escapist fiction.

I picked this up at a charity shop in E Yorks - now putting it into circulation on bookcrossing. First stop - a Virtual Book Box.

Elsi picked this out of the Virtual Book Box, and it went into the post today, along with !The Mistress of Spices

Arrived in today's mail. I've really enjoyed reading Cheek's books and am glad that I'm able to get them from time to time through BookCrossing friends.
