Journal Entry 1 by potok-fan from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi Finland on Monday, May 31, 2010
I'm a small-time Mavis Cheek fan. She tends to write women's fiction which is very much situated in present-day Britain - right down to the food fad of the moment - starring a plausibly-hapless sympathetic woman, trying to keep up with the Joneses and not quite managing. Or as the Daily Mail (!??!!) says, "Cheek is a marvellous writer whose characters are beautifully drawn, whose observations on the absurd behaviour of the middle aged invariably hit the mark ..." But then everything will work out in the end, which makes it great escapist fiction. I picked this up at a charity shop in E Yorks - now putting it into circulation on bookcrossing. First stop - a Virtual Book Box.

Arrived in today's mail. I've really enjoyed reading Cheek's books and am glad that I'm able to get them from time to time through BookCrossing friends.
