Python Dance was the third book I've read from Norman Silver. It wasn't as brilliant as No Tigers in Africa, but then again it was a lot better then A Monkey's Wedding. Python Dance raises a lot of important personal and societal issues (Ruth's body angst and self esteem, Cyril's homosexuality, Mannie's sexism and blatant abuse, the horrible racism in the whole South African society), but there's no mind-blowing end to the story like there was in No Tigers in Africa. I did enjoy Python Dance, though, and I recommend it to anyone who likes YA books.

9 out of 10

I took this book with me to Germany and I'm sure I'll read it. But it may take some time, since there are other books in queue. After that I'll pass it on to a reader who takes part in the 1 Jahr- 1 Land- Challenge for South Africa. I've already got an idea.

19.02.2013: Read it, because I take now part in the challenge myself. I liked that book a lot. I always like books like this one, describing the thoughts of a young woman that well. The title is from a dance that do the Venda girls when they are becoming an adult as a ritual. The book is like that: telling the story of the development of the body and the mind. The mentioned social problems made me angry, because I just don't understand that separation of Black and White and the life in there. I hope it's different now and think I wouldn't like a holiday in South Africa because of the unjustice there.

Read for the 1 Jahr= 1 land Challenge for South Africa

I picked this book up today at the Green Sage cafe in Templestowe. It sounds different to the stories I normally read, so I am curious to see what it is like.

The story of a girl coming-of-age in South Africa during the 1960s, during unprecedented turbulent times. Some excellent insights in to the injustices and attitudes in South African society at the time.
Overall a very readable tale.
I shall take this to the unconvention in Auckland so it shall reside in New Zealand for a time...

This book had th self absorbed teen character played well, in that a lot of the characters (apart from her mother) were somewhat lacking in development....perhaps because she wasn't looking at them.

An interesting read about growing up under apartheid.

If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.
