To be read.
Short historical book, well-written. Illustrations are kind of gloomy, but they're well done too. Both the illustrations and the book format are just right for such a story.
Sending this book to Annelis, who likes to read Newbery medal winners too.
This book looks like a nice and quick read, too. I'll take it with me to the train to work one of these days.
It is pity, the wish list search seems not to be working yet. It would be nice to see if somebody has this or some other book I am done with on her or his wishlist.
Thank you for the book, Harmaja!
From Amazon:
In 1756, during the French and Indian War in upper New York state, ten-year-old Edward is determined to protect his home and family with the ancient, and much too heavy, Spanish gun that his father had given him before leaving home to fight the enemy.

I read the book on the train going to a meet-up at Sokos. This is a good story for children. It is well written and illustrated, a really nice book.
But if you think about the things behind this story, it is not so nice at all. The white men are the heroes, of course, and the Indians fighting for their lands against the conquerors are the baddies. The history is the story of the winner.
This is my # 94 (100) in
"REDUCE MOUNT TBR 2011" Challenge arranged by Dove-i-Libri.
This is my # 111 in

Annelis gave this to me today on meeting. Thanks! :)
I tried to read this, but the story wasn't so interesting that I would have liked to read it further. I send this as a surprise to someone, who might enjoy children's books.

No idea about this book, but I'll see. Journaling this with a terrible headache.

Not really sure what to think of this.. White Dutch family, black slaves and hostile Indians. And killing in self-defence. The story told from the perspective of white man. The book gives an insight to American history, but the book does not give any moralistic considerations, nothing. Not even thoughts of the family members, no contemplation of why things have turned out the way they are. Just coping.
and this won a Newbery Medal?

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I am sending the book to Slipperbunny as a birthday surprise.
The book is such a curiosity that I thought it would be interesting one to receive.

Well it got me intrigued. =) Thank you for the book.
I finally decided to read this. The book was easy to read and in a way interesting, but it seriously lacked something. I usually like when children's books have some sort of lesson or things to think about. And I wanted to know more about the people in the story.
