Sometimes you finish a book, andit feels as if you have lost a friend. This is one of them, and I am not alone, to judge from the comments in the afterword.
I was almost put off when I read the author blurb at the beginning. "After the book was finished and greeted with avid enthusiasm, selling to publishers around the world. Mary Ann's health began to decline shortly thereafter, and she asked her niece, Annie Barrows, to help her finish the book." What kind of sentence is that? Fortunately I read on, and was immediately hooked by the charming characters and the suspense, and by everything I learned about the conditions in Guernsey during WWII. The strange sentence was explained in the afterword. The book had been accepted but the publisher wanted some changes in the text, and they were carried out by Anne Barrows.
The book makes me want to go to Guernsey, to read some of the books mentioned, to talk to the characters, but not to taste Potato Peel Pie (I can't stand beetroot). I have it 9 out of 10, because I felt there was not enough difference in the style of the different "voices". But a jolly good read.

Edited to add: one thing bothers me, the name Remy. In French it would be Rémy, and it is a boy's name, so I can't fathom why a girl should be called Remy. But then, I did once know a girl called Clovis...

Gave this to my cousin to take on holiday to Portugal (in exchange for one of hers).
