1974 Knopf hardcover Book-of-the-Month Club edition. With dust jacket, designed by R. D. Scudellari, identical to the picture icon attached to this same ISBN. This was on my list of best past thrillers to read, when I bought it a year ago for 25 cents from the sale shelf of Dimond Library.

I can let this go after I read:
1961 Call for the Dead [read 2009]
1962 A Murder of Quality [read 2010]
1963 The Spy Who Came In From the Cold [read 2010]
1965 Bread on the Waters (short story in Playboy) [read 2011]
1968 A Small Town in Germany [read 2011]

Edit July 3, 2014: This is my least favorite acclaimed thriller writer. I had hoped that the later books would become more digestable, but sadly, the opposite direction appears to be the case. Here, the complexity of the plot is indecipherable, the relationships are obscure, the motivations are hidden, the conversations are false intellectualisms, and the writing is dull and bothersome. Maybe there is good stuff going on here, but I don't have the patience for it. I currently have this ranked at #1,181 on my ranked list of best-read books lately.
