Enjoyable but silly thriller set in 19th century Paris, as the Eiffel Tower is opened and Buffalo Bill arrives in the city.

The hero, Victor Legris, seems all too willing to suspect his closest friends of murder when it could have been one of several hundred people - with friends like Victor, who would need enemies?! And I found the solution quite unbelievable. The 19th century Paris atmosphere is good though.

If you like Boris Akunin, you'll probably enjoy it, but it's not quite as good.

I hadn't heard of this book before you sent it to me rahar109 but I quite liked it. Not sure if I liked Victor but it was a good mystery and I liked all the detail about the event - the opening of the Eiffel Tower in 1889. Thanks.

I passed it on to Nu-knees during our walk round a sunny Knaresborough on 21st March.

Thank you very much, ReetPetite. I count historical murder mysteries as one of my favourite genres, especially if they're not too serious or gruesome, and this seems to fit into that category very nicely, thanks! It was good to see you yesterday - I thoroughly enjoyed our brief tour of the sights of Knaresborough :-)

A pleasant enough murder mystery - but nothing special. Nothing to fire the imagination. No reason to keep turning pages for any length of time. No reason to rush back to it when you'd put it down. A take-it-or-leave-it tale for a lazy weekend!
