Had this sitting on my bookshelf for ages, and finally got around to reading it.

A radio show turned into a book, it traces the development of scientific ideas through the lives of some of the most noted scientists. A large part of the text is made up of commentary by modern scientists and science historians explaining the relevance of the discoveries and their discoverers. Underlying it all is the deeper question of how important are individuals to scientific progress? If there wasn't a Newton, would someone else have come along to describe gravity and optics? Was relativity just a product of its time, or did it need the unique thinking of Einstein?
