Journal Entry 1 by awaywithfairies from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, May 13, 2010

From Amazon.co.uk: The first body they found was the dog. The poor creature's throat has been cut, and one paw severed completely. Then they found the body of the woman. She had been stabbed, again and again; she was naked, a piece of cloth had been stuffed into her mouth. The picturesque holiday island of Gotland is in the middle of a busy tourist season when the young woman is discovered murdered. Suspicion falls on her husband - the couple had been seen fighting the evening before. Inspector Anders Knutas is hoping it will be a straight-forward case; the local authorities are hoping so too, but more out of an interest in protecting the tourist trade than any desire to see justice served. Then another victim is discovered, again she is a young woman and she has been murdered in the same chilling manner. Inspector Knutas must face up to the horrifying prospect that there is a serial killer loose on the island. Knutas, aided by investigative journalist Johan Berg, begins to piece together the tragic history that unites the two victims, and alarmingly points to more murders to come. The killer remains unknown, moving freely, unseen, on the island. All that is clear is that the two victims are just the beginning, unless Knutas and Berg find the killer before he strikes again.

Journal Entry 6 by Sherlockfan at Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Thursday, February 17, 2011
I've been keeping this book for a time when I specially needed something different to tempt my reading palate. I'm so glad I kept it to accompany me through trialling hearing aids. Not an easy process but with this enthralling tale I was really diverted. Like all who-dunnits translated from Scandinavian countries it proved most interesting. They are just so different from books written in UK,US , Aus and NZ. Strong characters but not like those with which we are more familiar. Anders Knutas is one such strong, effective but essentially human Inspector. I wonder if we will see more of Johan Berg in subsequent tales, this being the first of mari jungstedt's novels. Thanks so much AWF. I really do appreciate your effort. Now to see if anyone is wishing for it.

Thank you to both Sherlockfan and garibaldisghost for this choice of book. A new Swedish author for me, and it looks like she has written others since this was published.

Journal Entry 10 by Cassiopaeia at Cardiff, Wales United Kingdom on Monday, January 23, 2012
This was a great read, thank you to all journalers for sharing. I had to keep reading as I really needed to find out whodunnit. That said it was interestingly different from Henning Mankell's usual downbeat style of writing. This Sweden seemed familiar but very different, the details that set the scene in complete contrast to Mankell's descriptions, I wondered if this author deliberately set out to distance her style or is her positive outlook (see dedication) on life that commands her writing.
