When I first read this book I loved it so much I thought I could never give it away. But it's been a long while now since I read it, and I have forgotten a lot, though I still have the impression that it is an incredible book.

I remember the scene where Mrs. Morel, while pregnant with Paul, is put out of the house by her husband. She walks around and she looks at the moonlight and she thinks -- what can possibly become of this child that will soon come into the world? Lawrence brought to life that sinking feeling that you get when something is really, really wrong and you are all alone and don't know what to do. He's a genius for pegging emotions exactly and then making them leap out of the page at you so that you just *feel* what the characters are feeling.

I've read that this is one of Lawrence's early works and that it has many autobiographical elements.

I'm bringing this one to the meetup tonight at Trident.

Released on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at Trident Booksellers and Cafe, 388 Newbury St in Boston, Massachusetts USA.

This went unclaimed at tonight's meetup. Trident doesn't like us to leave books there, since it is a bookstore, after all. Someone took it to release elsewhere... so it is somewhere I know not where.... (this one I almost regret giving away... I loved it so... )

I caught this book at the August Meetup of Boston Bookcrossers. It was a long and challenging read. At first it reminded me of "Angela's Ashes" which is nonfiction, so I was really impressed with Lawrence's descriptions, especially of Nottingham and of the people's flaws. It was a tragic story and after awhile, it went a little long; I wanted Paul just to get his stuff together. I appreciate the strong between mother and son, but I felt Lawrence went on the edge with the boundaries. Also Paul's pilot between pure and physical love while interesting, went around in circles and circles--I guess just like life.
