Paperback edition, with 276 pages.

Jeremy Pauling is a thirty-eight-year-old batchelor who has never left home. He has a passion for making sculptures out of odds and ends and he has a terror of beautiful women. The death of his mother leaves Jeremy in sole charge of her ramshackle old boarding house, and the arrival of a new lodger brings him a challenge he really can't handle. Her name is Mary Tell.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

The book is travelling to its next reader!
...I was a little absent-minded, I wanted so much to let it go, so things have been left out, but luckily at the post office the lady was helpful, so we managed to tape together the parcels...

Great book. First time I have read this author and I really enjoyed the way she has moved the story on through many characters- right to the very end. (MIL)

ETA MIL read and found it quite sad. She says that about a lot of books I read :)

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Welcome to Bookcrossing!

You have found a travelling book. Why not join in the fun? Read, release and pass on but don't forget to write a Journal Entry telling us where you found the book, if you read it what you thought about it and where you are going to leave it. If you join bookcrossing before you do the entry you will get an alert when the next person writes up about it and can track its travels. If you prefer to just leave an Anonymous Journal Entry, it will brighten up my day either way. Oh and if you like the book sooooo much you just don't want to let it go that is fine too, maybe one day eh :)

Enjoy!!

Hoping to leave this at the BC meet up in York

I picked this up at the York bookcrossers meetup last night. Mainly because I was excited it had cone all the way from Budapest.

I appreciated this book, but couldn't exactly say I enjoyed it. It's mostly about people hurting each other without meaning to, trying to be understanding of one another's needs but getting it wrong. There is plenty of that in my relationship history, so I can't say it's not well observed and beautifully written, but it's pretty bleak stuff. Or seemed so to me.

If you've picked this book up and you're new to bookcrossing, welcome! Thanks for visiting the website. I'd love to hear your comments on this book, if you want to add them to this page. You can remain anonymous, but if you choose to register you'll get emails so you can track the progress of this book whenever it moves on from one reader to another.

Usual Anne Tyler style...laconic, slow moving but somehow gripping. Quiet lives wonderfully described . Her characters are unusual and memorable. Found at kitchen garden cafe after Boo Hewerdine giig
