Fun read! A great variety of vintage mysteries - from very well known authors like Poe, Dickens and Poe, to less remembered ones like Baroness Orczy.

It's interesting the way the shape of the mystery story and even the definition have changed over the years. The authors from the 1800's use the word to mean a story where mysterious things happen and a death may or not be involved. The Purloined Letter is always given as a mystery and so is the Irene Adler story from the Sherlock Holmes oeuvre, but these are of the mysterious events type. I've always wondered about E.W. Hornung's gentleman cracksman. The story here, a challenge to a thief, was very good, but Raffles is a thief, no matter how you cover it up. His pal is such a milquetoast, except when it really counted, that you can't help but wonder how he lived before he joined up with Raffles. All in all, an interesting read into the past.
