The title essay describes the philosophy behind Thoreau's refusal to pay his poll tax as an expression of his opposition to the Mexican War.

It inspired Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Also included are his "Plea for Captain John Brown", "Life without Principle" "Slavery in Massachusetts", and "Walking".
