"One of the greatest works of American literature, The Red Badge of Courage gazes fearlessly into the bright hell of war through the eyes of one young soldier, the reluctant Henry Fleming. ... Ernest Hemingway declared, 'there was no real literature of our Civil War... until Stephen Crane wrote The Red Badge of Courage'."
"This edition includes the short story "The Veteran", Crane's tale of an aged Civil War soldier looking back at his past."

I found this book on a bench at the Spanish Banks, while I was taking a break from my bike ride. It looks interesting, so I'll be reading it. More to come.. once I get through the enormous introduction!

Whoops.. I forgot about this book for a while..

At the heart, I found this book less a tale of war than a tale of the concept of war. It focuses not on the people and events, but on the archetypes of people and events. The primary tool is irony, and it is laid on thickly. People are introduced as thinking and acting one way, and then are soon shown to be, in battle, the opposite. After a while I found myself not believing anything the author was telling me in any new scene and instead reading it almost like a sarcastic and surly teenager would say "Oh yes, I LOVE broccoli." The predictability of style is my largest, and really the only, complaint about this book.

The battles are vivid, the troweled-on irony does make interesting points abouts humanity, and the characters, flat though they are, do paint an interesting picture of the American people of the civil war era.
