A passionate story, beautifully written, plausible and engaging. Highly recommended.

Releasing this for Saturday's meet-up.
This is my favourite book of all time. Thanks for sharing marmee463 - I did think about the U3A members but think I will take it to Sydney instead where I'm sure I'll find another reader at the Unconvention later this month.
Here is the journal I wrote when I first read this book in July 2006.
"This could be the first 10 of the year for me. What an amazing story and a debut novel too. I couldn't put the book down and I didn't want to finish it either. An amazing look at life in Afghanistan and the unlikely friendship between the higher caste Pushtan boy Amir and the son of his father's Hazara servant Hassan. I cried throughout the book, there were many twists and turns in the story because of Hassan's "sacrificial love" for Amir and their changing relationship.
The day of the annual kite tournament when Amir won and Hassan was his runner changed their lives forever, at the same time as Afghanistan was changing with the invasion of the Russians and the eventual takeover by the Taliban.
A heartbreaking story - highly recommended!"
