Ice Blues: A Donald Strachey Mystery

This is the third in Stevenson's "Don Strachey" series about a gay Albany PI and his lover. The books combine mysteries with the ups and downs of Strachey's love life; early on his wandering eye (and other bits) tend to get him into trouble, and while Timmy is quite long-suffering even he has his limits at times. (This is a 1980s mass-market paperback, different edition and cover than shown.)
This story features a mysterious killing and a huge amount of cash, which Strachey is instructed to use to destroy the anti-gay political machine of Albany. Finding out just what's behind all this - and protecting himself from others who are eager to get their hands on the cash and to stop his investigation - keeps Strachey pretty busy... A good snarky-tough-guy-private-eye tale with some endearing characters!
[This is one of several of the Strachey books that's been adapted to film; I've enjoyed them all.]

This book's going into my Based on the Book bookbox, with this book serving as the bookbox journal. The box will be on the way to the first participant soon. Enjoy!
Found in the Based on the Movie Bookbox.
To be released as part of the "Based on the Book" bookbox. Sending it off!
I definitely had to pull this one from the Bookbox. I have read several of the Russell Quant novels by Anthony Bidulka and am intrigued by this one.
Anthony Bidulka is going to be a keynote speaker at When Words Collide 2012 in August. I may end up wild releasing this book at the festival as well.
Thank you so much for sharing, GoryDetails.

This was a really good mystery! Great style of writing, compellingly readable.
Anthony Bidulka must have been influenced by Richard Stevenson. There are some definite similarities between the characters of Donald Strachey and Russell Quant, but Donald is a little rougher, more sarcastic and a little meaner than Russell - Russell is more of a sweetie.
I will be keeping my eye out for others in this series!
Really goes to show you that you should never judge an older book by it's older, kinda crappy cover ;) This is a gem!
I will probably reserve this for now for Bookstogive's Mystery/Thriller VBB

Damn! Read this a couple of years ago, and see that I didn't journal. All I remember this long later was that I enjoyed it.
Adding to emmjo's LBGTQ bookbox, where maybe it will find a next reader who is much better than I, re journalling after reading.

This book rode to the end of the bookbox. I read one of the other books in this series and liked it, so I'm curious to give this one a go.
I found this an entertaining mystery. The drama of local politics was a unique touch, and I found most of the characters compelling and engaging, even outside their parts in the mystery. The actual murder-solving was a bit bland, without any really engaging twists or unexpected developments, but the strength of the characters makes it interesting even when it gets predictable.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Added to the LFL, which was better-stocked this time than the last couple times I swung by.
Found this book at the Little Free Library in Cayuga Heights, Ithaca NY, where our climate is very similar to that in Richard Stevenson's "Ice Blues."
It's been a particularly snowy and icy-cold winter this year, so curling up with this fine read was a cozy adventure.
